Chapter Two

So here I am. It's my new chapter, my new beginning. It's taken a while to get here but I finally am! And I can't wait to tell you.....I am now Cabin Crew for British Airways. BRITISH AIRWAYS!!!!! (Yippee jumps in air)

So the cats out of the bag (lol not that anyone cared) But I'm home in England and have almost finished my training now for BA. The joining process took a considerable amount of time - I had my assessment day in October 2014, got the job in November and was due to initially start this year in May but due to references taking so long and criminal record checks expiring because of the references (don't even get me started arrgghhh) I finally started training in August!

So far I have completed SEP (Safety and emergency procedures), SEP conversions of B777 aircraft and baby Airbus variants A319, A320, A321 and have also just finished the three day AvMed (aviation medication) course. Tomorrow will be the pool drill day and slides which is actually gonna be quite fun :) then I will have finished all SEP training (minus 2 days of B747 conversion) and then begin 2 weeks of customer service training!

I'll keep you posted on how everything is going and for new starters or BA hopefuls i'll be posting an assessment day and interview blog soon.

Love Tia x

Watch This Space!

Hello All...

I guess some of you might feel I have dropped of the face of the universe.

Well I kinda have in terms of keeping up Memoirs of a Trolley Dolly. Poor little neglected blog. It's a shame really, I used to really enjoy blogging to you all and answering all your questions about joining Emirates. It's a very exciting time and I know when I going through all the joining formalities and making the big move to Dubai, blogs like these gave me so much reassurance and guidance. I had a million questions that needed answering so i'm sure you will do too.

So, if you happen to come across my blog and you find it useful, or you have a question or anything... I just wanted to say I am still here and I am happy to help! So just ask and I will do my best to answer your query!

Its 2015 and I aim to be a better blogger.

ALSO, I have some exciting news but right now i'm going to keep it on the DL so watch this space! ;)

Memoirs of a Trolly Dolley

Really REALLY great read. For those of you already working as cabin crew in Dubai i think you can pretty much relate to everything said here. And for the newbies, hopefuls and about to move to Dubai...Please don't let this put you off! Moving to Dubai and becoming cabin crew for Emirates was one of the best things i have ever done! I would absolutley recommend it to anyone who has the chance! Amazing experiences and amazing people. Its just not forever....

(Please note...I did not write this, the link to original text is below!)

"I left my home country thinking “Whoever leaves last shall slam the door behind him”. I couldn’t care less if I was headed to New York, Tokyo or Alaska. Both a runaway and a breakthrough the job I was now to pursue was relocating me in Dubai. The name of the emirate only echoes glamour and high-class lifestyle. I never imagined and I never hoped to work as a flight attendant. But life had other plans for the following three years.
Living in Dubai turned out to be a challenge because of the high temperatures the desert had to offer. The winter, or whatever they call that cold season from November to February never lowered under 20 degrees C and it was the only time of the year when you could have spent your whole day outdoors. The rest of the year everybody was an AC addict. Another test was Ramadan, the month of fasting. For the non Muslims living in Dubai the rules were very clear: no drinking eating singing or dancing in public.Wearing short skirts or pants or indecent cleavages as well as any public display of affection can draw serious legal repercussions all year round but especially within the month of Ramadan. Regardless of the religion you follow you had to respect the fact that you are now resident of a Muslim territory. Only natural nonetheless.
I found myself wearing my impecable uniform, discovering places I never imagined I would, turning heads in airports across the world, being photographed admired and above all envied. My salary was now 7 times bigger than the one I had back home, I was accommodated in 5 stars hotels, to cut it short — I was paid to travel, as simple as that. And paid big.
I learned to work with different colleagues every flight, to live side by side with more than 100 nationalities, (I do admit 2 or 3 nationalities really tested my nerves) to manage serious medical cases, to save lives in catastrophic situations, to smile no matter what, to sleep without being tired, to eat without being hungry, to pack a suitcase at the speed of light. Today I can still put my red lipstick on perfectly even when on a bumpy taxi ride. Thousands of pictures from every continent stand as testimony of a wonderful job and lifestyle. You sip your coffee in Trafalgar Square, have lunch on a boat trip to an island in Seychelles and enjoy late night drinks on the streets of Melbourne.
Milk and honey some may say. And so it was up to a given day when I woke up asking myself “whereto?” Three years of packing and unpacking. It’s ironic how so much traveling can become monotony.
As much as I tried to book my vacations at the right moments, I was the absentee at Christmas, birthdays, weddings or pregnancy announcements. I was missing the four seasons I grew so fond of. I was missing mom’s cooking and having endless senseless conversation with her. I was missing home. Life was following its’ provident path while I was pushing my trolley above the clouds. My mother’s call woke me up one night. My father had suffered a stroke and I wasn’t there for him. I blamed myself for my absence. Sometimes I still do. Yet I succeeded in obtaining an emergency leave not before being reminded “When you decided to move to Dubai, you must have been aware of the fact that you can’t go home anytime you want”. Stroke is universally considered one of the top medical emergencies so the statement of my manager stood behind me like a bad joke. I caught the first plane wondering if I would find my father alive or if he would be able to recognize me.
I had my share of humiliation, racism and sexism on-board from all types of passengers. I was yelled at, I was insulted and looked down upon. The only thing I could have done was to walk away if not with smile at least with a straight face holding no trace of anger, disappointment or rebellion. Yet what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.
I suffered two industrial injuries, both of them in the spinal cord area, two severe barotraumas, and hormonal imbalance. Radiations, jet lag, lack of sleep and oxygen, half healed medical conditions — all of them left marks upon my immunity. Nevertheless, the list of medications air crew are allowed to take was quite limited for objective reasons. Same applies for the sick days on ground. So getting back to work fully recovered is sheer utopia.
I learned that company business always comes first. And I learned it the hard way.
Allow me to rewind back up to the presentation of my new career upon joining. We were presented a colorful video with happy crew faces and happy passengers all of them heading to the most magical places of this planet. It almost felt like a gospel ceremony. Some of the new joiners embraced that projection more than others. We were also told that our organs wouldn’t be viable for transplant after 2 years of flying. We were afraid to ask why but we had our guesses right. Above all that any testimony in court would not be taken into account after 3 years of working as a flight attendant. We didn’t ask the reason and even if we did I am pretty sure the response would have been a rhetorical question. We all accepted these side effects and focused on the colorful video presentation secretly thinking “ I’m not going to stay here 3 years…..”
I was among the first stewards to override the seniors on-board and rapidly proceed to do CPR. I broke one tooth pressing the chest of that passenger found breathless. I felt the exact moment when death stole her from underneath my palms but I continued to push. Another flight brought the experience of managing a miscarriage of a young woman who wasn’t even aware of the fact she was pregnant. Nose bleeding and fainting were ordinary events even on short flights. These incidents were probably the only moments at work when I actually felt useful and spiritually fulfilled. That is- when there was a happy end.
I recall myself joking with my fellow stewards “ I am waiting for a birth on-board. Only then can I resign with the belief that I have seen them all “.
You would love Dubai if you love huge classy Business Towers. I cried my eyes out looking at a complete double rainbow in Malta.
You would love the luxury cars and the biggest mall in the whole wide world. I was happy to hear the rain against my window.
You would love the 5 stars international cuisine at the top of Burj Khalifa. I was missing my mom’s chicken broth.
You would be fascinated about Dubai cosmopolitan life with more than 150 nationalities living and working together. I was missing the old me.
You would love to hear that Dubai is probably the safest place in the world. There is no prostitution and no drug trafficking. I wouldn’t bet on it if I were you!
Soon my body started to send me desperate messages. I knew my time to close this chapter of my life had come. So I did it violently with no regrets. The same way you remove a band aid. My health condition ordained the final countdown of my career.
As I count my blessings and my curses the first ones tend to win. I am proud of having worked as a stewardess as much as I am proud of quitting.
And you, the one reading now, if you ever have this chance-grab it. However, take all the best from it and run. When it starts to consume you from the inside out then it’s time to go home or further.
Today I am happy to remember weekdays and dates again. I feel Sundays once more. I bought myself a really small purse. Today I truly love my red lipstick, because I wear it when and if I please.
I came back to mom’s chicken broth with the certainty that things don’t change by slamming doors."
Again, just to clarify - I did not write this, the author is Alexandra Radulescu and you can find her blog here.

The Dubai Stone

I am getting fat. I'm going to say Dubai is making me fat, but alas, its me. My eyes are bigger than my belly and i can't stop eating...especially on flights!!!! Ok so i may be exaggerating a bit when i say fat but i'm putting on weight. its this lifestyle!! When i moved here, there were all these roumers about 'the dubai stone' how you will put on a stone whilst living here. oh shiiiiiit I've already put on half a stone!!! Having said this, i did loose weight before i came here but honestly, I'm eating so unhealthy. When I'm on flights i eat a meal tray, (sometimes even two!!!) and i'll help myself to the magical 'dry stores' which is full of chocolates and biscuits all things delicious. Ohhh and the puddings. Shit its so bad. And thats just the flights, when I'm not working, I'm always out to dinner, or getting a take away. In fact, i just got a wagamama delivery. ON. MY. OWN...isnt that pathetic?! I've never ordered a takeaway on my own in my life!! Actually i don't think I've ever ordered a take away! It was taaaaassty though!!!! Ha i dunno what this particular blog is about I'm just having a moan cause my stomach is like a big bloated balloon. Its very sexy. Maybe i think that if i write it down for the world wide web to see (and my 26000 viewers...say whaaaaaat?!!) that i'll do something about this little (i mean big...fat) problem. If not, i'll just have to rename the blog 'Memoirs of a trolley wobbly'

I've Finished Aviation College!!

Wow I can't believe i've finally finished training!! Feel like I've been training forever and now its suddenly over! The last two weeks have been service training which is certainly was very different to SEP, GMT and Security training!! We had two theory exams which are computer based and we also have practical tests on the simulators where we do "flights" to London Heathrow, Ahmedabad and Sydney. They are actually a lot of fun, we serve our colleges as we would any passenger, serve them drinks (no alcohol obviously!!), hot meals, snacks, afternoon tea, croissants and all that jazz....!!

My First Roster!

This weekend I got my first roster for when i start flying in March!! SO EXCITING!! My first two flights will be supy flights where I go on both A380 and B777. On soupy flights you work as more of an assistant so you can see how everything works and help out if the other crew need anything! Then thats it all your flights following this will be operational! EEEK not long now!!
Ok so without further ado, my supy flights will be to Dhaka in Bangladesh (turnaround) and Munich (layover). My operational flights for March will be Paris, Munich, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and London Heathrow!!! Yeaaaah so excited to go back home to see my family and friends and get more of my belongings to bring out to Dubai! Also whats exciting about my LHR flight is that I'm 'deadheading' on it, so this means i will be travelling as a passenger one way and working the return (or vice versa)! and fingers crossed if I'm lucky my mum and sister will be on the same return flight to Dubai with me!! Only 5 days left of training college now!

Insane weekends

Every weekend I have spent in Dubai has been endless fun (...except for the hangovers). The nightlife here is awesome, so many clubs to go to with all different types of music. and the parties arnt just limited to the night either, actually i'd say the parties are even better in the day!! I want to tell you about my weekend two weeks ago...It was just amazing. We started off at Habtoor Hotel XL Beach club for a pool party. Chilling by the pool with all the girls, suns out, music playing, attractive people in every direction and free unlimited drinks! Being a girl in Dubai certainly has its advantages! The pool party ended up being an all day all night event - we left the pool early evening to go back to our apartments and change, then back to the hotel for a meal and back to the pool area to continue the drinks and dancing! Such an awesome day! The next day we were invited to watch the Silver Cup Polo Championships which was so lovely. I'd never been to a polo game before so was pretty snazzy to be chauffeured there and back with all my girlfriends. Later in the evening we went to a sushi restaurant just behind the Sheikh Zayed road called Zuma which was faaaaaabulous. We had endless cocktails and the chefs selection of sushi and after the meal we all went to a club called Crystal in a porsche! Crystal was super packed but we had a table and drinks so i was just happy enough dancing! It was pretty crazy I'm not used to nights like this! But i could certainly get used to it haha!  Oh yeah and also we went to an after party at the Ritz! All the clubs in Dubai close at 3am. Its pretty annoying its so early but everyone just seems to go back to each others apartments for after parties so its alright in the end! The Ritz was great our 'aquaintance' (ha) had a suite so we continued the drinking and ordered a load of room service!! You'd think that that weekend would be hard to top but this weekend was just as fun! I went to Zinc the Thursday night, to Barasti Beach with all my batch mates on Friday,  Dinner at Buddha Bar in the evening drinking endless Moet, followed by Embassy nightclub and back to the after party in a suite at the Grosvenor House! I also went to the Palm for the first time this weekend to Atlantis and this great beach club called Nasimi Beach (it was like Nikki Beach in St Tropez, everything white and just cool as fuck). Later on in the day i met up with my bestie and went shopping at the Emirates mall and bought a few things in the Zara sale! Another perfect weekend then it was back to the aviation college for the Noujoum Day 'Star Day' in Arabic... (don't ask ha), Image and uniform day and security training. Alotta lotta fun! My final day of security training is tomorrow then I'm on my final two week stint of service training!! Then thats it!!! I'll be cabin crew flying the sky, isn't that marvellous/crazy?! Cant wait :) x

GMT

Little bit delayed with my posts sorry guys i'm too busy having an amazing time!!! The weekends are far to short!! Anyway last week I had Group Medical Training, really enjoyed learning about different medical emergencies and the week went so quickly. Part of the medical training we learnt how to diagnose a casualty from knowing certain signs and symptoms and what they mean, perform CPR, Deliver a baby (and the placenta), inject a casualty with an Epipen when having an anaphylactic reaction, dealing with a choking passenger, understanding different types of bleeding and what to do in these situations, how to bandage wounds, fractures, breaks the list goes on....!! The final theory exam for GMT was fine, i didn't find it hard or have to revise much (especially compared to SEP) it was just a case of learning a lot of medical terminology and what each medication is used for. Also locations of each medication/equipment on the aircraft! A little confusing but its just something you have to learn and know by heart so that in a medical emergency you can act fast and efficiently!

I feel like a Trolley Dolly!!!

I got my uniform!!! Ive been waiting for this day and it was so exciting getting my suitcase (Samsonite one verrry nice!) filled with all my new uniform! Couldn't wait to get home and try it on and here it is!! Vanity at its best but i don't care i love my new uniform! Its all starting to feel real now! Also I'm currently medical training and today i learnt how to deliver a baby! I was so looking forward to this part of the training its always fascinated me! And i was picked to deliver the placenta! Really very interesting would be so cool to put my new skills into real life! Just on an aeroplane its not so ideal!!!
Anyway, pictures......
